Winning at Poker: Objective and Subjective Factors

We all want to win in the game of poker. Yet few realize that winning at poker mostly entails being objective in the game rather than being too subjective.

Being objective means being goal-oriented, and thus, attaining progress with our poker wit and skill. If we're too subjective with our poker play our tendency is to be very emotional. This is what they say about going on "tilts." Going on a tilt means being easily irritated with our bad plays or those of other players. This would negatively affect our chances of winning at poker.

Objective playing means being more intellectual in the game. Poker is mostly wits and skills and a little bit of luck. Emotions are an option, and we're better off choosing positive emotions in the game. We all go on tilts now and then, but winning at poker means we have to discipline ourselves in this aspect. If, for example, we have a QJ suited (spade) and the flop is A-Q-10 suited (heart) we need to calmly fold our hand if we need to, especially if the game is bombarded with betting.

Being too subjective would tend to ignore wisdom in our play and just want winning at poker at all cost. This makes our losses more painful, aside from being more costly. With an objective mind, losing or winning at poker gives us the advantages of learning more and adding to our poker wisdom. We have to learn from both our winnings and losses.

When we're too emotional, we tend to be chasing our wins uncontrollably. We tend to be too pot committed with our bets. And when we have this situation opponents more easily put us under their control. We become too reactive when we're too subjective. These factors do not augur well for our winning at poker.

It's vital to often become more rational and focused in playing poker. Mistakes and losses come to any player at the table. But among the marks of a pro is the ability to learn from mistakes calmly and be resilient as a much better player the next time around. Winning at poker means quickly learning from and adapting to situational challenges we face each game.

So, the next time we face difficulty or an upsetting loss in poker, we should learn to welcome them coolly and maturely like real pros. Winning at poker is mostly influenced by our objective or subjective approaches in the game.
